Airtel Reports Strong Q1 Profit Growth as Higher ARPU and Premium Subscribers Boost Performance

Bharti Airtel has started the new financial year on a strong note, reporting a significant rise in profit for the June quarter as the telecom company benefited from higher revenue per customer and continued growth in its subscriber base.

The company’s consolidated net profit increased 37.3% year-on-year to ₹8,167 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with ₹5,948 crore in the same period a year earlier. The result highlights the company’s improving ability to generate more revenue from its growing customer base despite intense competition in India’s telecom market.

One of the most important factors behind Airtel’s performance was the improvement in average revenue per user (ARPU). ARPU increased by 5.6% to ₹264, showing that Airtel is successfully moving customers toward higher-value plans and services. For a telecom operator, ARPU is a closely watched metric because even a modest increase can have a significant impact on revenue when it is applied across hundreds of millions of customers.

Airtel’s customer base in India also continued to expand. The company’s total Indian user base reached approximately 492 million, representing a 12.8% increase from the previous year. The number of 4G and 5G users increased by 7.5%, indicating that more customers are shifting toward smartphones and higher-speed mobile data services.

The shift toward premium subscribers is particularly important for Airtel. Instead of relying only on adding large numbers of low-value users, the company has been focusing on retaining customers and encouraging them to move to plans that generate higher monthly revenue. This strategy can help improve profitability while allowing Airtel to continue investing in its network.

Airtel’s overall financial performance was also strong. Consolidated revenue increased 18.4% year-on-year to ₹58,539 crore, exceeding analyst expectations. The growth was supported by the company’s India operations as well as its international business.

The company’s Africa business also delivered strong growth during the quarter, with revenue rising 45.4%. This gives Airtel another important source of growth outside the highly competitive Indian telecom market.

The Indian telecom industry has changed significantly over the past decade. Competition intensified after Reliance Jio entered the market in 2016, forcing operators to invest heavily in networks while keeping prices competitive. Airtel has responded by expanding its 4G and 5G network, strengthening its postpaid business and focusing on customers who use more data and premium services.

The latest results have also increased expectations that telecom operators could raise tariffs again. Analysts are reportedly anticipating potential tariff increases of around 12% to 15% in the near future. If implemented, higher tariffs could provide another boost to Airtel’s ARPU and profitability, although the impact on customers and competition would need to be considered.

For consumers, however, higher tariffs could mean increased monthly mobile bills. Telecom companies argue that stronger pricing is necessary to support investments in 5G networks, spectrum, fibre infrastructure and other digital services.

Airtel is also continuing to invest heavily in its digital infrastructure. The company has been expanding its mobile network and data capabilities while developing businesses beyond traditional mobile services, including broadband, enterprise connectivity and data centres.

The strong June-quarter results therefore reflect more than just an increase in profit. They show Airtel’s broader strategy of premiumisation, network investment and customer growth beginning to translate into stronger financial performance.

For investors, the improvement in ARPU and subscriber quality is particularly significant. If Airtel can continue increasing revenue per customer while maintaining subscriber growth and controlling costs, the company could strengthen its position in India’s telecom market.

The company still faces challenges, including intense competition, large capital requirements and the possibility of regulatory changes. Customers are also becoming increasingly sensitive to pricing as telecom companies consider higher tariffs.

Nevertheless, Airtel’s latest results provide a positive signal for the company and the broader telecom sector. With profit up 37.3%, revenue rising 18.4% and ARPU reaching ₹264, Airtel appears to be entering the new financial year with strong momentum.

The key question now is whether this growth can continue through the remaining quarters. Further subscriber upgrades, higher data usage, tariff changes and continued 5G adoption will likely determine how Airtel’s financial performance develops in the months ahead.
