Gold prices are starting the new week at elevated levels after a strong rally last week, as investors continue to look for safety amid uncertainty over global interest rates, geopolitical tensions and the broader economic outlook.
The precious metal has remained one of the most closely watched assets in global markets this year. Investors have been turning to gold not only as a traditional safe-haven asset but also as a way to protect portfolios from currency volatility, inflation risks and uncertainty in financial markets.

A major factor supporting gold has been expectations surrounding U.S. monetary policy. When investors expect interest rates to fall, gold can become more attractive because lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding an asset that does not pay interest. Recent weakness in U.S. employment data has therefore increased attention on the Federal Reserve’s next policy decisions.
The U.S. dollar is another important factor. Gold is generally priced internationally in dollars, so movements in the currency can have a direct impact on bullion. A weaker dollar can make gold relatively cheaper for buyers using other currencies and can encourage additional demand.
Geopolitical uncertainty is also keeping investors interested in gold. Continuing tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have increased demand for assets that are considered relatively defensive. Any further escalation could encourage investors to increase their exposure to precious metals.
Gold’s strong performance has also been supported by central-bank demand. Central banks around the world have been increasing their gold holdings in recent years as they look to diversify their foreign-exchange reserves. This has created an additional source of demand that can support prices even when short-term investor sentiment changes.
The Indian market has felt the impact of the international rally. Domestic gold prices have risen sharply over the broader period, with high prices changing the way consumers approach jewellery purchases and investment. Industry research has noted that Indian gold prices had already risen substantially during the 2025-26 financial year, reflecting strong international bullion prices and global uncertainty.
For Indian consumers, higher gold prices create a mixed picture. Existing gold holders may benefit from the rise in value, while people planning to buy jewellery or physical gold face a significantly higher cost. Jewellery demand can become more price-sensitive when prices rise quickly, with some buyers choosing lighter designs or postponing purchases.
