SBI-backed Cashfree expands into global payments and travel finance

Indian fintech company Cashfree Payments, which is backed by the State Bank of India (SBI), is preparing a major expansion into global payments infrastructure, focusing on travel-related transactions, overseas investments, and business-to-business (B2B) cross-border payments. The move marks a strategic shift for the company as it moves beyond domestic digital payments into higher-value international financial services.

According to recent reports and statements from company leadership, Cashfree is planning to roll out pilot programs in 2026 for these new services. These pilots will first test systems for handling international travel payments, overseas investment transfers, and cross-border business settlements before full-scale deployment.

At present, Cashfree already operates as one of India’s leading payment infrastructure providers, processing around $80 billion in annual transactions and serving more than 1 million businesses across sectors such as e-commerce, SaaS, marketplaces, and financial services. However, most of its revenue still comes from domestic and e-commerce-related payment flows.

The company’s expansion into cross-border finance reflects a broader shift in India’s fintech industry, where firms are increasingly targeting international money movement as domestic payment markets become highly competitive and low-margin.
