Tata Group is facing an unexpected leadership question ahead of the Tata Sons Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 18, 2026. N. Chandrasekaran, who has served as chairman of Tata Sons since 2017, is reportedly considering stepping down from the position, according to reports citing people familiar with the matter. No final decision has been announced, and neither Chandrasekaran nor Tata Sons has publicly confirmed that he plans to resign.
The development comes at a particularly important time for Tata Sons because shareholders are expected to vote on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as a director at the upcoming AGM. His continuation as chairman depends on remaining on the Tata Sons board. Reports say Chandrasekaran has discussed the possibility of stepping down with close associates as uncertainty grows around the shareholder vote.
Chandrasekaran became chairman of Tata Sons in February 2017 after previously leading Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). During his tenure, the Tata Group has expanded its presence across several major industries, including technology, automobiles, aviation, electronics, infrastructure and consumer businesses.
The current uncertainty appears to be linked to differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, which is the group’s largest shareholder. Tata Trusts owns roughly 66% of Tata Sons and therefore has significant influence over major decisions involving the holding company. Reuters reported that tensions have emerged over issues including board representation, business strategy and the future relationship with minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group.

One of the key issues is Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. Tata Sons had deferred a decision on his continuation earlier this year following concerns reportedly raised by Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts. The disagreement has created uncertainty ahead of the August 18 meeting, where the director reappointment process is expected to become an important focus.
The situation has become even more complicated following recent developments involving Tata Trusts. Vijay Singh, a vice-chairman of Tata Trusts, stepped down as a trustee of Sir Ratan Tata Trust on August 11, although he is expected to continue as a trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. The timing of the move, just days before important Tata meetings, has added to speculation about internal changes within the group’s leadership structure.
For the Tata Group, any sudden change at the top would be significant. Tata Sons acts as the principal holding company of the Tata Group and has stakes in several major businesses, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Power, Titan, Tata Consumer Products and Indian Hotels. The group also has a major presence in aviation through Air India and in financial services through Tata Capital.
Chandrasekaran’s leadership has also coincided with a period of aggressive investment and expansion. Tata companies have been investing heavily in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, electric vehicles, aviation and new technology. A change in leadership could therefore attract considerable attention from investors and business partners, particularly if it results in changes to the group’s strategic priorities.
However, it is important to distinguish between a reported possibility and a confirmed resignation. As of August 12, there has been no official announcement that Chandrasekaran is stepping down. Reuters reported that discussions about a possible resignation have taken place, but that no final decision had been made.
The August 18 AGM could therefore become an important moment for the future direction of Tata Sons. Investors and industry observers will be watching closely for the outcome of the director reappointment vote and any subsequent developments concerning the chairmanship.
For now, the biggest question is whether Chandrasekaran will continue leading Tata Sons through the remainder of his current term or whether the group will begin an unexpected leadership transition. Until the company makes an official announcement, speculation around his future is likely to remain high.
