India Launches First Practice-Oriented Bachelor of Cybersecurity Program to Address Talent Shortage

India has taken a major step toward strengthening its cybersecurity workforce with the launch of the country’s first practice-oriented Bachelor of Cybersecurity (B.Cyber.) program by IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur. The four-year undergraduate course aims to prepare students for real-world cyber threats through a combination of classroom learning, laboratory training and two years of field deployment. The initiative comes at a time when cyberattacks are becoming more frequent and sophisticated across industries.

According to industry estimates, India faces a shortage of nearly 1.5 million cybersecurity professionals, creating a significant skills gap as businesses accelerate digital transformation. The new degree program is designed to bridge this gap by producing graduates with hands-on expertise in ethical hacking, digital forensics, network security, malware analysis, cloud security and cyber defense operations.

Unlike traditional computer science courses, the Bachelor of Cybersecurity program focuses heavily on practical experience. Students will spend nearly two years working on live industry projects, security operations and cyber incident response, allowing them to gain real-world exposure before graduation. This industry-focused model is expected to improve employability and create professionals who are ready to handle modern cyber threats from day one.

The demand for cybersecurity experts has increased rapidly as organizations adopt cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital banking, e-commerce and connected devices. Every sector—including banking, healthcare, manufacturing, government services and telecommunications—is investing more in cyber resilience to protect sensitive information and digital infrastructure.

The Reserve Bank of India has recently warned that AI-powered cyberattacks are emerging as one of the biggest threats to the country’s financial system. Banks and financial institutions are strengthening their cybersecurity infrastructure by deploying artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring and advanced threat detection systems to counter increasingly sophisticated attacks.

Experts believe education will play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. By introducing cybersecurity as a dedicated undergraduate discipline, India is creating a stronger pipeline of skilled professionals capable of defending critical infrastructure, securing digital payment systems and protecting businesses against ransomware, phishing and data breaches.

The curriculum is expected to include subjects such as cryptography, secure software development, cyber law, digital investigations, penetration testing, cloud security, artificial intelligence in cybersecurity and risk management. Students will also receive laboratory-based training to simulate real-world cyber incidents and improve their technical problem-solving skills.

Industry leaders have welcomed the initiative, stating that practical cybersecurity education is essential as cybercrime continues to evolve. Companies are increasingly looking for graduates who possess hands-on experience rather than only theoretical knowledge. The integration of industry deployment into the curriculum is expected to make graduates more competitive in the job market.

The program also reflects India’s broader focus on strengthening digital infrastructure and supporting initiatives such as Digital India. As businesses continue investing in technology, the demand for cybersecurity professionals is expected to remain strong for years to come.

Overall, the launch of India’s first Bachelor of Cybersecurity program marks a significant milestone in the country’s technology education landscape. By combining academic excellence with real-world industry experience, the initiative is expected to help build a skilled cybersecurity workforce capable of protecting India’s growing digital economy against future cyber threats.
